Instructional Design Myth Buster

Instructional design is not technical writing. Almost anyone can become an Instructional Designer, but it is not an easy skill to acquire and retain. Teachers, corporate trainers and subject matter experts do not have any distinct advantage in becoming quality Instructional Designers. Not all English literature graduates and postgraduates are suitable to be Instructional Designers. BEd and MEd graduates from India do not have any specific advantage in becoming Instructional Designers. Instructional Design is not just about writing; it is also about identifying a learning problem and designing a solution that overcomes the problem. Instructional Design is not something new; it has a long history. Instructional design applies to all forms of learning for all subjects and for all types and age groups of learners. It is not restricted to elearning only. Instructional Design is not about web page designing. It is not about being a programmer, artist or an animator. Many Engineers and business graduates have also become excellent Instructional designers in the world. However, there is no way of being certain that all engineers, English graduates, science graduates, mass communication graduates, or teachers can become good instructional designers. Each individual is different. Most e-learning projects in India make use of low-level Instructional Design skills. Over time, this will change.

The field of instructional design is vast and fast changing due to the new possibilities that the technology provides. There are graduate, postgraduate and PhD programs in Instructional Design and related fields in USA, Europe, Australia, etc. Instructional designers constantly strive to increase general knowledge and technical awareness in communication and learning. If you are very passionate about instructional design, you can start your career and retire in this field. As long as the world population needs to acquire new knowledge and skills, the field of instructional design will continue to blossom. Since all of us need food, shelter, clothing and education to survive, instructional design will probably last as long as human beings on this planet will.
